Social media and web 2.0
2009/10/16Interesting talks by Pelle Snickars and Geert Lovink this morning. Since Europeana relies so heavily on the member states’ websites and web presence, conferences like IAECH09 could be a great way of developing awareness of the importance of social media for cultural heritage institutions.
collaboration
2009/10/16During the afternoon session on collaboration, Magdalena Gram from the Swedish National Library was quite skeptical towards Europeana – not the least in terms of its lack of unifying standards. As many are aware of this remains one of the problems with Europeana; low-rez photographs or posters with unreadable messages is still a problem – even the site itself is very promising. It seems that the heritage sector ought to learn from other platforms on the web (Flickr, Wikipedia, YouTbe) where problems with, say, resolution or play-out (in terms of audiovisual material) is hardly ever experienced. Naturally, these sites have a different financial situation, but they neveretheless have set common standards not only for metadata but for the actual material itself.
